AEDP and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) in Surrey

Relational Counselling for Emotional Healing, Anxiety, and Disconnection

Some therapy focuses on your thoughts. Some focuses on your behaviours. AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) work with something deeper — your emotional system, your inner world, and the patterns that shape how you relate to yourself and others.

These approaches are designed to help you reconnect with your feelings, your body, and your needs in a safe and supported way. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, emotional shutdown, or the aftermath of trauma, AEDP and EFT create the conditions for change that is not just intellectual but also felt, embodied, and lasting.

We offer AEDP and EFT in person at our counselling clinic in Cloverdale, Surrey. Sessions are paced to your nervous system and grounded in attunement, presence, and care.

What Are AEDP and Emotion-Focused Therapy?

While these two therapies share a foundation in emotion-focused, relational healing, each brings something unique to the work.

What Is AEDP?

Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy helps you access core emotions that have been suppressed or avoided due to fear, trauma, or chronic self-protection. It works by establishing a deeply attuned relationship with your therapist, allowing you to safely feel and process what was once too overwhelming. AEDP integrates body cues, emotional signals, and relational shifts in real time to help rewire old patterns from the inside out.

What Is Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)?

Emotion-Focused Therapy helps you understand the role emotions play in your life and relationships. EFT offers a structured way to slow down reactive patterns, explore unmet needs, and shift emotional responses during the session. It’s especially powerful when you’re caught in cycles of shame, withdrawal, frustration, or numbness. Emotions are treated as valid and intelligent, even when they are painful, and supported with compassion.

What AEDP and EFT Can Help With

These therapies are well-suited for clients navigating:

  • Emotional numbness, shutdown, or disconnection

  • Overwhelm, anxiety, or emotional intensity

  • Depression, grief, or inner emptiness

  • Complex trauma or attachment wounds

  • Self-critical or perfectionistic patterns

  • A longing for more depth, ease, or authenticity in relationships

You don’t need to know how to explain your emotions clearly. These therapies help you access what’s happening inside in ways that feel safe, gradual, and supported.

How Sessions Work

Sessions are experiential and rooted in presence. You may focus on:

  • Slowing down and noticing what’s emerging

  • Staying with a feeling long enough for it to shift

  • Unpacking moments of activation, shutdown, or inner conflict

  • Reconnecting with feelings that were once too much to bear

  • Experiencing new relational patterns, in real time, with your therapist

We don’t push catharsis or expect you to perform insight. We meet you where you are, gently and consistently.

Why These Therapies Are So Effective

Talk therapy can help us understand patterns. But understanding isn’t always enough. Real change often requires:

  • Feeling emotion without being overwhelmed

  • Being met and accompanied, not analyzed

  • Staying connected to yourself and others, even when it feels hard

AEDP and EFT are particularly effective when:

  • You’re highly self-aware but feel stuck

  • Your emotions feel too much, or too far away

  • You’ve always been the strong one and don’t know how to soften

  • You want to feel more like yourself, not just function better

Who This Approach Is For

AEDP and EFT may be a strong fit if:

  • You tend to shut down or overthink when emotions arise

  • You’re exhausted from always keeping it together

  • You’ve tried other therapies but want to go deeper

  • You long for a space where you can feel without apology or pressure

  • You value emotional depth but struggle to access it on your own

These modalities are especially supportive for sensitive, introspective adults who have learned to cope alone and are ready to try something different.
