Surrey Counselling and Therapy

Trauma-informed therapy for anxiety, overwhelm, and life transitions

At Tidal Trauma Centre, we offer a calm, relational approach to therapy for adults, couples and families in Surrey and surrounding areas. Whether you're feeling anxious, disconnected, burnt out, or simply not like yourself - counselling can be a space to reconnect with what matters most.

Many of our clients come to us unsure of where to begin. You don’t need a diagnosis or a specific story to start.

You only need the sense that something in your life or your body wants care, clarity, or change.

We help you explore what’s going on beneath the surface so you can move forward with more clarity, confidence, and calm.

All of our Surrey therapists offer free consultation calls—no commitment required.

What Is Counselling

Counselling is a confidential space to explore thoughts, feelings, patterns, and relationships—with someone trained to support that process.

It’s not just about talking. It’s about understanding. And it’s about building new possibilities in how you respond, relate, and live.

Why Do People Come to Counselling in Surrey

Clients often come to counselling for support with:
• Anxiety and emotional overwhelm
• Chronic stress, burnout, or perfectionism
• Relationship challenges or communication issues
• Grief, identity shifts, or life transitions
• Low self-worth, shame, or inner criticism

We meet you wherever you are in your process—whether you’re exploring something new or returning to therapy for deeper integration.

Who We Work With

We provide counselling in Surrey for:

  • Adults and youth navigating emotional or mental health challenges

  • Couples seeking support for connection, communication, or conflict

  • Highly sensitive individuals and neurodivergent clients

  • Those living with chronic stress, trauma, or nervous system dysregulation

  • Families under stress and needing additional support

We also work with clients who’ve had previous therapy and are ready to go deeper.

Our Approach to Therapy

We work collaboratively to help you find the right counsellor—whether you’re looking for structure, softness, practical tools, or deeper emotional work.

Each of our Surrey therapists brings a unique combination of approaches, presence and personality.

Our therapists have specialized training in various counselling therapies.

  • EMDR Therapy for trauma, phobias, and distressing memories

  • Somatic Therapy for nervous system regulation and embodiment

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) to explore inner workings with compassion

  • AEDP & Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) for emotional connection and resilience

  • Sensorimotor Psychotherapy to address unresolved patterns in the body

Therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. We co-create each process with you.

Therapy is always shaped around your nervous system’s pace and your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surrey Counselling

What’s the difference between a counsellor and a therapist?

In most cases, the terms are used interchangeably. At Tidal, all of our clinicians are Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs), and many also draw from specialized training in somatic therapy, EMDR, IFS, and relational work. What matters most isn’t the label—it’s whether the person sitting across from you feels emotionally attuned and well-equipped to help you.

Do I need a diagnosis to begin counselling?

Not at all. You don’t need a diagnosis, a crisis, or a “good enough” reason to begin. Whether you’re managing daily stress, feeling stuck in a relationship pattern, or simply craving space to process your experience, you’re welcome here.

Can I work with someone who specializes in anxiety, trauma, or relationships?

Yes. Each therapist on our team has their own areas of focus, and we’ll do our best to match you with someone aligned with your needs—whether that’s anxiety, trauma recovery, attachment work, or navigating complex family dynamics.

How do I know if my therapist is the right fit?

We believe the right therapist helps you feel both challenged and safe. That’s why we offer free consultations—to give you a chance to get a feel for the person before committing. We also have a guide to consult calls for clients so you know what you might want to ask and discuss. It’s completely okay to trust your gut, ask questions, or explore a different option if something feels off.

Is what I share in therapy private and confidential?

Yes. Sessions are confidential and protected within the ethical guidelines of counselling in British Columbia. The only exceptions involve immediate safety risks or legal reporting obligations, which we’ll explain clearly during your intake.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

Some of our therapists do. Let us know your schedule when you reach out, and we’ll try to accommodate your availability—especially if weekday hours are a barrier.

What if I start with one therapist but want to switch?

That’s part of the process. You’re never “too much” or “too picky” for wanting a therapist who feels right. If you’d like to explore a new fit, we’ll support that without hesitation or pressure.

How much does it cost? Will my insurance cover it?

Fees vary depending on the therapist and session length. Most extended health plans in BC cover services from Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs). We’ll provide receipts for reimbursement and are happy to walk you through what your benefits may include.

Is in-person therapy better than online sessions?

Not better—just different. Some clients love the grounding atmosphere of our Cloverdale offices. Others feel more comfortable regulating from their own space at home. Both formats are effective, and we’ll support whichever feels more accessible and safe for you.

What if I’ve done therapy before and it didn’t work?

That’s more common than most people talk about. Sometimes therapy doesn’t help because it wasn’t the right fit—or the approach didn’t meet the depth of what you were carrying. We specialize in integrative, body-aware therapy that often feels different from standard talk therapy. If you're open to trying again, we're here.
