How to Choose a Therapist:
A Client Guide to Consultation Calls

What to Expect, What to Ask, and How We Help You Find the Right Fit

At Tidal Trauma Centre, we encourage all new clients to begin with a free 15-minute consultation call. Whether you're local to Surrey, living nearby in Langley, or accessing therapy online from elsewhere in BC, this is a low-pressure, meaningful way to connect with a therapist (or a few!) and get a sense of who is right for you.

You don’t need to know exactly what you’re looking for. You don’t need to share your whole story. This is a space to explore possibilities — without pressure.

This is your time to ask questions, share as much (or as little) as you feel comfortable with, and explore whether we might be a good fit for your needs.

What Is a Consultation Call?

A consultation call is a short, confidential conversation with one of our therapists or intake team members. It usually lasts around 15 minutes and is held by phone or video. It’s not a therapy session — it’s a chance for us to connect with you and help you determine next steps.

These calls are available to clients across British Columbia. If you're local, we offer in-person therapy at our Cloverdale office in Surrey.

There is no pressure to book after your consult. You’re welcome to take your time or ask for other options.

How Do You Choose the Right Therapist?

Finding the right therapist isn’t about picking the “perfect” modality or credentials — it’s about feeling safe, understood, and supported in a way that fits who you are.

You might consider:

  • What you’re hoping to explore, shift, or heal

  • Whether you prefer a structured or organic approach

  • If you’re more drawn to body-based or talk-based work — or both

  • How you feel after your consultation call: seen, understood, curious

If you’re not sure, that’s okay. Many people start therapy simply knowing something feels off — and wanting something to change.

What Can You Expect During a Consultation Call

A Warm Welcome
You’ll be greeted with respect and understanding. We know how much courage it takes to reach out.

Space to Share
You can tell us what you are hoping to get support with. You can keep it general or go into detail if you choose.

A Collaborative Conversation
We will offer insight into how our therapists might approach the concerns you are bringing forward. You’ll also get a chance to ask about our therapeutic methods, specialties, or anything you’re curious about.

Help Finding the Right Therapist
We want you to feel safe and understood. If we feel another member of our team might be a better fit, we will let you know and offer to help with the match.

Questions To Ask At Your Free Consult

There are no wrong questions. Here are a few examples of what you might want to know:

  • What types of therapy do you offer?

  • What is your approach to working with anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship issues, or whatever brings you in?

  • What does a typical session look like?

  • What happens if I’m unsure or nervous about starting?

  • How does confidentiality work?

  • Can you tell me about your experience or training with EMDR, IFS, somatic therapy, AEDP, etc.?

  • How have you worked in the past with people with my history/goals/preferences?

What You Don’t Have to Worry About

  • You don’t need to prepare a “story” or have everything figured out.

  • You don’t need to share more than feels comfortable for you.

  • You don’t need to convince anyone you “qualify” for support.

  • You don’t need to commit to therapy at the end of the call.

Whether you are ready to start right away or just gathering information, every step of this process is designed to honour your pace.

Many people tell us that the hardest part is reaching out — and once they do, it starts to feel more possible.
