Online Couples Counselling Across British Columbia

Real support, wherever you are.

Whether you're navigating disconnection, constant conflict, or a major life shift, couples therapy can help you find your way forward—together.

At Tidal Trauma Centre, we offer online couples counselling to clients across BC. From long-distance partners and busy co-parents to couples living in rural or remote communities, our virtual sessions bring evidence-based support to wherever you are.

Why Couples Choose Online Therapy

You don’t need to sit on the same couch to start repairing the connection between you.

Virtual relationship therapy is just as effective as in-person counselling—and often more accessible. Our clients choose online sessions because they:

  • Live in different cities or provinces

  • Have young children or shift work schedules

  • Prefer the comfort and privacy of their own home

  • Live in rural, remote, or underserved areas

  • Have anxiety, illness, or transportation barriers that make commuting difficult

We provide secure, private sessions using encrypted video platforms designed for therapeutic care—not corporate meetings.

What Online Couples Counselling Looks Like

Sessions can be attended from one device together, or from separate locations. You’ll meet with your therapist via secure video in real time, just like you would in a private office.

Here’s what we help with:

  • Emotional disconnection and “roommate syndrome”

  • Repeating arguments and miscommunication

  • Rebuilding trust after betrayal or rupture

  • Navigating parenting, grief, illness, or life transitions

  • Strengthening intimacy, understanding, and emotional safety

  • Exploring whether to stay, separate, or redefine the relationship

We offer online couples counselling across British Columbia, including:

  • Victoria, Nanaimo, and Vancouver Island

  • Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, and the Lower Mainland

  • Kelowna, Kamloops, and the Interior

  • Prince George, Fort St. John, Terrace, and Northern BC

  • Haida Gwaii and remote Indigenous communities

Our Approach to Relationship Therapy

Our trauma-informed couples therapists help you move beyond surface-level problem-solving into deeper understanding and change.

Depending on your needs, your therapist may use:

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for bonding and attachment

  • Attachment-Based Therapy to explore how past wounds show up today

  • Somatic Therapy to regulate nervous system responses during conflict

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) to understand the protective parts of each partner

  • Communication coaching for building safety, clarity, and respect

Is Online Couples Counselling Right for You?

Virtual sessions might be a great fit if:

  • You and your partner live in different places

  • One or both of you have trouble accessing in-person therapy

  • You feel more comfortable opening up from your own space

  • You want to work with a trauma-informed therapist who may not be available locally

  • Your schedule requires flexibility

Even if you’re unsure about therapy—or if your partner is hesitant—you can start the process. Some clients begin alone and invite their partner when the space feels safe.

FAQs About Online Couples Counselling

Is online couples therapy really effective?
Yes. Decades of research and clinical experience support the effectiveness of virtual therapy. Many couples find they can be just as emotionally open—and sometimes more comfortable—meeting from their own space.

Do we have to be in the same location during sessions?
Not at all. You can join sessions from the same device or separately. We regularly support couples living in different cities, provinces, or time zones.

Will it feel awkward over video?
It’s normal to feel unsure at first, but most couples adjust quickly. Your therapist will help create a supportive environment that feels relational, even through the screen.

What technology do we need?
You’ll need a stable internet connection, a private space, and a device with a camera and microphone. Using headphones can help with sound quality and privacy.

Can we switch between online and in-person sessions?
Yes. If you’re located near our Surrey office, you’re welcome to alternate between online and in-person sessions. We’ll work with your schedule and comfort level.

What if only one of us is ready to begin?
That’s very common. One person can start therapy on their own and invite their partner into the process later. Some clients choose to begin with individual work to explore their part in the relationship dynamic.

Can we still benefit from therapy if we’re thinking about separating?
Absolutely. Couples counselling can help clarify next steps—whether that means rebuilding connection or moving toward separation with care and clarity. We also support conscious uncoupling and respectful co-parenting transitions.

Do you offer support for non-traditional relationships?
Yes. We work with all relationship structures—including queer couples, polyamorous relationships, long-term partnerships, and neurodiverse dynamics. We’re here to support your unique experience with nuance and respect.

Is couples therapy covered by insurance?
It depends on your provider. If your benefits cover services with Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs), many of our sessions will be eligible. You’ll receive detailed receipts for insurance or tax purposes.
