Online Trauma Therapy
Virtual Counselling for PTSD, Complex Trauma, and Nervous System Recovery
Trauma doesn’t only live in memory. It can shape how you think, how you relate, and how your body responds to everyday life. Even long after the event has passed, your nervous system may still be bracing — alert, disconnected, numb, or overwhelmed.
Online trauma therapy gives you space to understand and shift those patterns from wherever you are in British Columbia (or the rest of Canada). Whether you’re navigating PTSD, complex trauma, relational trauma, or ongoing nervous system dysregulation, we offer virtual support that is steady, attuned, and tailored to you.
At Tidal Trauma Centre, we’re known across BC for providing thoughtful, in-depth trauma therapy that respects each client’s pace, capacity, and story. Our online sessions reflect the same high standard of care our in-person clients trust — grounded in current research, body-based practices, and relational attunement.
What Counts as Trauma?
Trauma is not defined by what happened, but by how it impacted your system.
Many clients come to us unsure if what they’ve experienced “counts.” If you’re noticing symptoms like hypervigilance, shutdown, anxiety, emotional flooding, disconnection, or chronic tension — trauma therapy may help.
Big “T” Trauma
These are events that overwhelm your capacity to cope and often leave a clear before and after. We work with clients who have experienced:
Childhood emotional, physical, or sexual abuse
Sexual assault or boundary violations
Car accidents or natural disasters
Domestic violence or coercive control
Medical trauma or surgical complications
Systemic or racialized violence
Exposure to war, displacement, or crisis
Little “t” Trauma
These are experiences that may not be life-threatening, but are still deeply dysregulating or wounding — especially when they happen repeatedly, or without support.
Examples include:
Chronic emotional invalidation
Parentification or being “the strong one” in your family
High-control religious environments
Academic or workplace humiliation
Subtle but ongoing misattunement in relationships
Grief that went unsupported or unseen
What Is Online Trauma Therapy?
Trauma doesn’t just live in your thoughts. It can shape how you think, how you relate, and how your body responds to everyday life. Even long after the event has passed, your nervous system may still be bracing — alert, disconnected, numb, or overwhelmed.
Virtual trauma therapy creates a supportive and safe space where you can explore those entrenched patterns at your own comfortable pace. You don’t necessarily need a formal diagnosis or a perfect timeline to begin this healing journey. We start with your unique story, your individual capacity for growth, and your personal lived experiences — prioritizing your narrative over any preconceived checklist.
How Online Trauma Therapy Works
Virtual trauma counselling offers the same depth and structure as in-person work, with added flexibility and safety. Sessions are conducted through a secure video platform and designed to honour your nervous system’s needs.
Sessions may include:
Understanding how your body responds to stress, threat, or shame
Tracking and gently releasing stuck emotional or somatic patterns
Working with protective parts and survival strategies without forcing change
Reconnecting with a sense of self, safety, or internal permission
We don’t rush. We don’t bypass. And we don’t expect you to re-tell every detail. We stay present and responsive to what’s emerging — and help you stay regulated while doing it.
What Trauma Therapy Can Help With
Clients often seek online trauma therapy to address:
Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories
Dissociation or emotional numbing
Panic attacks, anxiety, or chronic fear
Persistent guilt, shame, or self-blame
Trust issues, relational difficulties, or boundary confusion
Exhaustion, burnout, or shutdown that doesn’t improve with rest
Whether the trauma happened years ago or is still unfolding,
therapy can support your system in reclaiming regulation, connection, and a greater sense of choice.
Modalities We Use in Trauma Therapy
Our trauma therapists integrate several body- and emotion-focused approaches in online work, including:
EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
Helps reprocess distressing memories and reduce the emotional charge they carry. EMDR is especially useful for clients experiencing flashbacks, persistent fear, or reactions that feel out of proportion to present triggers. Online EMDR uses modified bilateral stimulation tools that are effective and client-controlled.
IFS (Internal Family Systems Therapy)
Supports you in understanding and working with your internal system — including protective parts, exiled parts, and core self. IFS is particularly helpful when trauma has created inner conflict, chronic self-criticism, or feelings of fragmentation.
Somatic and Sensorimotor Therapy
Focuses on what is happening in the body, not just the mind. These approaches support clients who feel disconnected, chronically tense, or physically overwhelmed by emotional experiences. Online sessions include guided tracking, grounding, and gentle movement — adapted for video.
AEDP and Emotion-Focused Therapy
These relational, experiential methods help you process emotion in the context of safety. They are especially effective when trauma is relational in nature and emotional expression has felt unsafe or disorganizing.
Who This Is For
You may benefit from online trauma therapy if:
You’re unsure what happened but know you feel unsafe or disconnected
You’ve tried talking about it but didn’t feel better afterward
You struggle to stay grounded during conflict, emotion, or intimacy
You’re exhausted from overfunctioning or constant alertness
You want therapy that respects your pace and complexity
We work with adults across BC, including those living in remote areas where trauma-informed therapy may be hard to access.
Available Anywhere in British Columbia
We offer online trauma therapy throughout the province, including:
Urban centres like Vancouver, Victoria, Surrey, Kelowna, and Nanaimo
Small and rural communities like Quesnel, Port Alberni, Fort St. John, Smithers, and Castlegar
As long as you live in BC and have access to a private space with internet, we can work together.
We’ve supported hundreds of individuals across BC in navigating PTSD, emotional overwhelm, and complex trauma — and we’re here when you’re ready.
Trauma therapy isn’t just retelling the worst things that have happened.
Trauma therapy delves into the embodied sensations and the responses ingrained within your nervous system over time. This therapeutic journey is not just about revisiting painful memories; it's about working with the lingering effects on your body and mind. When a compassionate presence accompanies you through this process, profound shifts can occur.
Online trauma therapy offers the unique opportunity to explore these emotions in a safe and supportive environment, regardless of your location. It allows you to engage with your trauma at your own pace, facilitating healing in a way that feels accessible and tailored to your needs.
