Not Sure What You Need? Counselling, Therapy, and Finding the Right Fit

Maybe you’ve typed “counsellors nearby” into Google and been overwhelmed by the options. Or maybe you’ve read ten bios and still feel unsure what kind of support you actually need. Counselling? Therapy? Trauma work? Relationship help?

It’s okay not to know.

At Tidal Trauma Centre, many clients come to us not with a clear plan—but with a sense that something needs to change. If you’re wondering do I need counselling or therapy?, this post will help you feel a bit more grounded in your search.

Counselling vs. Therapy: Is There a Difference?

In British Columbia, the terms “counselling” and “therapy” are often used interchangeably.
At Tidal, all of our team members are registered professionals with Master’s degrees and advanced clinical training. Some use the title counsellor, some use therapist—but all are equipped to help you explore complex emotions, patterns, and life experiences.

The more important question isn’t the title. It’s the fit.

What kind of relationship will help you feel safe, seen, and supported enough to begin?

Types of Support We Offer

Here’s a snapshot of what our Surrey counselling team works with:

  • General Counselling: For anxiety, burnout, grief, boundaries, and life stressors

  • Trauma Therapy: EMDR, IFS, and somatic-based work for unresolved wounds

  • Relationship Work: Individual or relational support for communication and attachment

  • Parts Work + Nervous System Support: Exploring protective patterns and regulation

  • Specialized Support: For spiritual abuse, neurodivergence, identity exploration, and more

Explore our team to see who might align with your needs—or just reach out. We’re here to help you navigate the decision.

What If I’m Not in Crisis?

You don’t have to be falling apart to begin therapy.
In fact, many of our clients come in saying things like:

  • “I’m functioning, but I feel off.”

  • “I keep repeating the same patterns.”

  • “I’m exhausted and disconnected, and I don’t know why.”

  • “I want more clarity, but I don’t know where to start.”

Whether you’re coming in for something specific or just a general sense that things could be better, that’s enough.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Starting

You don’t need a full roadmap, but here are some prompts that can clarify what you’re seeking:

  • What parts of my life feel heavy, repetitive, or stuck?

  • What kind of relationship would help me feel safe enough to explore that?

  • Do I want support that’s more body-based, emotion-focused, or practical?

  • Am I open to exploring trauma or past experiences—or not right now?

If you’re unsure how to answer these, that’s okay. Our Client Guide to Consultation Calls can walk you through what to ask and what to notice.

FAQs: Counselling vs Therapy in Surrey

Do I need a diagnosis to work with a therapist?
No. You don’t need to meet any diagnostic criteria to benefit from therapy. We work with many people navigating life stress, burnout, and emotional overwhelm.

What if I don’t know what kind of therapist I need?
That’s normal. Our intake process helps you explore what might be most helpful, and we’ll match you with a therapist who fits your goals and preferences.

Can I switch therapists later?
Yes. We’re always open to feedback and want you to feel supported. If the fit doesn’t feel right, we can help you explore other options.

Do you offer in-person and online options?
Yes. We offer in-person counselling in Cloverdale (Surrey) and secure online sessions across British Columbia.
